Antimicrobial Stewardship to Fight Back Against Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing problem in our healthcare system. Our available regimens of antimicrobial agents are becoming less and less effective as bacteria develop resistance to them. This leaves patients without effective treatment options and the growth of resistant microbial strains that can infect others. Moreover, there has been a stagnant growth of new antimicrobial agents available for clinical use, leaving healthcare professionals without effective weapons against these dangerous infections. Effectively, we are in a post-antimicrobial era.

Thus, important programs are being implemented to fight back. The Antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) promotes a more conscientious use of antibiotics, which is imperative to help decrease resistance to our limited arsenal against these adaptive diseases. Delivering the proper antibiotic and dose to the right patient at the right time can improve patient safety, reduce healthcare costs, reduce prescription errors, and effectively reduce future antimicrobial resistances.
