Antimicrobial Stewardship to Fight Back Against Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing problem in our healthcare system. Our available regimens of antimicrobial agents are becoming less and less effective as bacteria develop resistance to them. This leaves patients without effective treatment options and the growth of resistant microbial strains that can infect others. Moreover, there has been a stagnant growth of new antimicrobial agents available for clinical use, leaving healthcare professionals without effective weapons against these dangerous infections. Effectively, we are in a post-antimicrobial era.

Thus, important programs are being implemented to fight back. The Antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) promotes a more conscientious use of antibiotics, which is imperative to help decrease resistance to our limited arsenal against these adaptive diseases. Delivering the proper antibiotic and dose to the right patient at the right time can improve patient safety, reduce healthcare costs, reduce prescription errors, and effectively reduce future antimicrobial resistances.

Students for Antimicrobial Stewardship Society (SASS) is a student-led national organization dedicated to raising awareness of antimicrobial stewardship and resistance across Canada. Founded by medical students, we support a multidisciplinary approach to stewardship through collaboration with students from health professional programs including Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Medicine. We represent students regarding antimicrobial stewardship at the national and international level, interfacing with industry, medical organizations, educational institutions, and governments.
