Dr. Shanina Knighton is faculty at Case Western Reserve University where she works as a clinical nurse scientist, KL2 Scholar and part-time assistant professor in biomedical engineering. Her work focuses on infection prevention and control including technology-based interventions to improve patient hand hygiene, identification of harmful bacteria and viruses on patients’ hands and strategies for implementing infection prevention guidelines in different settings including the Cleveland VA and MetroHealth System. Dr. Knighton spent over a decade at the Cleveland VA, as a bedside nurse and also as a National VA Quality Scholar where she obtained interprofessional quality improvement and clinical research training in infection prevention and trained medical and nurse practitioner residents. She received her Doctor of Philosophy from Case Western Reserve University School of Nursing, has served in various leadership roles including the national research committee for the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology. To date she has received multiple federal grants, fellowships and awards for her contributions to science including the National 40 Under 40 Minority Leader in Health Award.
